He emphasized the group's alleged targeting of Christians, stating that such violence had reached levels "not seen for many years, and even Centuries!" The U.S. Africa Command further confirmed the strike, reporting that it resulted in the death of multiple ISIS militants.
But here's where it gets controversial... This military intervention follows Trump's warnings, starting in late October, about an "existential threat" to Christianity in Nigeria. He even hinted at potential military intervention due to the perceived failure to protect Christian communities from violence. It's worth noting that, according to Reuters, the U.S. had already been conducting intelligence-gathering flights over significant portions of Nigeria since late November.
And this is the part most people miss... The Nigerian government has a different perspective. They maintain that armed groups target both Muslims and Christians, and they dispute the U.S. claims of targeted persecution against Christians. They also emphasize their efforts to protect religious freedom. Despite these disagreements, Nigeria has agreed to collaborate with the U.S. to strengthen its forces against militant groups. Nigeria's population is roughly split between Muslims, primarily in the north, and Christians, mainly in the south.
This announcement was made on Christmas Day while the former president was at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida, where he was spending the holiday.
