Tom Amone, Hull KR's newest powerhouse, is already feeling the burn! He's diving headfirst into his first pre-season with the team, and the verdict is in: it's one of the most grueling he's ever experienced. The team recently jetted off to Tenerife for a nine-day training camp, taking advantage of the top-notch facilities in the Canary Islands. Many Super League clubs, including Hull KR, have chosen this location for its ideal warm-weather conditions.
Amone, a former Dream Team prop at 29 years old, signed a new three-year deal at Sewell Group Craven Park during the off-season. He's clearly relishing the experience, stating, "Pre-season has been tough, probably one of the hardest I’ve done - it’s been good.” He also added, "I’m loving being here, and being around a winning environment and people who want to win more trophies. Everyone is on the same page, and everyone knows what they want."
But here's where it gets interesting: Amone's journey hasn't been without its bumps. After returning from the NRL mid-way through the 2025 season, he joined Castleford Tigers on a short-term deal. Unfortunately, a serious foot injury in September sidelined him.
However, the former Leigh Leopards fan favorite is now nearing full fitness and is expected to be ready for the upcoming season. He's back in action and eager to contribute.
Hull KR has a busy schedule ahead. They'll host Wakefield Trinity in their only pre-season match before kicking off the 2026 Super League campaign against newcomers York Knights. They'll also enter the Challenge Cup at the third-round stage.
Amone shared that he's "good to be running as well after my injury," and is now focused on getting more miles under his belt. He explained that he ruptured some ligaments in his foot but thankfully avoided surgery.
The team's use of the Tenerife facilities is a consistent element of Willie Peters’ coaching strategy. Wakefield and Leeds Rhinos have already visited, and 2025 Grand Final opponents Wigan Warriors are also scheduled to travel there.
Amone is keen to build relationships both on and off the field, aiming to drive Hull KR towards even greater success in 2026. He emphasized the importance of "building on our connections" and integrating the new players into the team's systems.
He concluded by saying, "The boys are all skillful, so it’s going to be better quality over in the warm weather as well."
