Singapore’s Plan to Hire 1,000+ Teachers in 2025: Mid-Career Switchers Welcome (2026)

Singapore's education sector is undergoing a significant transformation! The Ministry of Education (MOE) is on a mission to hire a whopping 1,000 new teachers in 2025, and here's the twist: half of these applicants are not fresh graduates but mid-career professionals seeking a change.

But what's behind this surge in applications? The MOE has noted a steady increase in teacher applications over the last three years, though the exact number of successful hires remains undisclosed. Education Minister Desmond Lee's announcement in July 2025 revealed plans to boost teacher recruitment, aiming to increase annual hires from 700 to over 1,000.

The latest figures show a slight dip in teacher numbers, with 29,605 teachers in 2024 compared to 30,396 in 2023. The MOE assures the public that their recruitment process is rigorous, with a structured interview process for the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) teacher training program. Untrained applicants are required to present a lesson, and successful candidates may wait between two to five months for an offer.

And here's where it gets controversial... Workers' Party MP Kenneth Tiong questioned the prolonged timelines for PGDE applications, suggesting it might deter qualified candidates. The MOE acknowledged the concern and promised to improve communication, stating that half of the 2025 PGDE applicants received offers within the typical two to five-month window. Interestingly, about 7% of successful interviewees withdrew before receiving an offer.

Mid-career applicants face unique challenges. Two anonymous applicants shared their frustration with the lengthy process and lack of updates, making it difficult to plan career transitions. Dr. Jason Tan, an associate professor at the National Institute of Education (NIE), highlighted the value of mid-career teachers. He believes they contribute to applied learning programs, drawing from their work experience to bridge theory and practice. Moreover, their age and potential parenting experience may enhance their understanding of parental concerns and improve parent-teacher communication.

A thought-provoking question: Are mid-career teachers a boon for the education system, offering unique skills and perspectives, or does the lengthy hiring process risk deterring valuable candidates? What do you think?
