Two daring climbers, Hugo Parmentier and Symon Welfringer, have just etched their names into the annals of climbing history with the first ascent of a breathtaking new route called Resurrection in Corsica. This isn't just any climb; it's a potential game-changer, with whispers of a difficulty level that could redefine what's possible in French multi-pitch climbing.
They tackled the imposing Punta di Lunarda, a granite massif known for its challenging spires, where several established routes already beckon experienced climbers. What makes Resurrection stand out? They opened it ground up, embracing a free climbing style wherever possible, strategically placing bolts and incorporating traditional gear. But here's where it gets interesting: the duo estimates that Resurrection could clock in at a staggering 5.14d, potentially making it one of the most difficult multi-pitch climbs in all of France. Think about that for a moment!
This epic adventure began when Welfringer first spotted the tantalizing line back in 2021. Their journey to the climb was almost as impressive as the ascent itself. They embarked on a tandem bike, cycling a grueling 320 kilometers with a staggering 3,000 meters of elevation gain to Saint-Mandrier. From there, they sailed across the Mediterranean for a 36-hour voyage to Propriano, Corsica. After renting cars, they transported their gear to the base of the climb and began their 15-day push to conquer the route.
They navigated steep walls and challenging slabs, strategically bolting the most demanding sections to facilitate a future free attempt. They believe that a significant three pitches could fall into the incredibly difficult 5.14 range. The climbers themselves described Resurrection as "a big wall route at the very limit of what we consider possible in climbing." They also mentioned that not all the moves have been completed yet due to a lack of time and strength. However, they are convinced that the route can be climbed free to the summit.
Beyond their monumental achievement, the pair also set their sights on the first free ascent of L’Archeron on Punta di u Corbu, a route previously established by Sylvain Millet and Arnaud Petit. And if you're curious about other climbs in the area, Punta di Lunarda boasts several established routes, including Nirvana (5.11, 250m) and Parfums de Violence (5.13c, 250m).
