Get ready for an exciting dive into the world of swimming! The 2025 Winter Junior Championships - East just concluded, and we're here to highlight some incredible performances that might have slipped under the radar.
The Unsung Heroes of Day 4
Let's kick things off with a bang! 14-year-old Ava Burham from Cumberland Valley made waves in the 200 backstroke prelims. She not only qualified for the 'C' final but also shattered her personal best, dropping an impressive three seconds and breaking the 2-minute barrier for the first time. But here's where it gets interesting - due to a scratch from Audrey Derivaux, Ava found herself in the 'B' final, where she finished 16th, still faster than her preseason best. Talk about a breakthrough performance!
In the boys' 200 backstroke, Owen Sarbak, a 16-year-old from Peninsula Wave Riders, dominated the 'B' final. He clocked in at 1:44.85, a significant improvement from his previous best of 1:47.40. And this is the part most people miss - Owen had never even dipped below 1:50 before this season!
Moving on to the boys' 200 breaststroke, Lucas Ackermann's performance was nothing short of remarkable. He dropped a whopping four seconds from his previous best, swimming under 2:00 for the first time. Ackermann, who's headed to Texas A&M in the fall, finished 7th in the final.
Ainsley Stephan, a name to remember in the girls' 200 fly, qualified 20th from prelims but didn't let that deter her. She sliced a second-and-a-half off her time, breaking the 2-minute mark for the first time in the final. Stephan will be representing Wisconsin in the fall, and we can't wait to see what she accomplishes next.
And now, the distance events! The finals session began with the 1650 freestyles, and Catherine Dorsey, a 16-year-old from Blazing Barracudas, finished 10th overall. With a long course seed time of 17:17.21, she dropped over 40 seconds from her previous best, an incredible feat.
In the boys' 1650 freestyle, Charlie Knoepp of Club Wolverine swam his second mile ever and finished 20th overall. His time of 15:33.32 was over two minutes faster than his previous best, a testament to his hard work and dedication.
These athletes have proven that age is just a number and that determination knows no bounds. Their performances on Day 4 of the 2025 Winter Junior Championships - East are a testament to the depth of talent in the swimming community.
