Get ready for an exciting addition to the Boston Red Sox! We're talking about Caleb Durbin, the newest infielder who's about to make his mark. But here's where it gets interesting: Durbin's height, standing at 5'7", immediately brings to mind another Red Sox legend, Dustin Pedroia.
The Red Sox aren't expecting an immediate MVP-level impact from Durbin, but they're hoping his defensive skills will strengthen the infield and that his swing will thrive with the help of Fenway Park's left-field wall.
"Caleb's not going to be hitting 40 home runs, but he's a run-producer, a base-getter, and a key part of the solution," says manager Alex Cora. "He's all about defense and base-running, which is music to my ears."
Durbin, a right-handed hitter, could bat in the sixth spot after lefty Wilyer Abreu. Last season, he posted a .256 batting average with an impressive .721 OPS, 11 homers, and 25 doubles in 136 games with the Milwaukee Brewers. He also showed great plate discipline with a 9.9% strikeout rate, well below the league average. It was a successful rookie year, earning him third place in the National League Rookie of the Year voting.
"I'm happy with my strikeout rate and overall performance," Durbin says. "But I know I can improve my exit velocity and bat speed. That's my focus now."
The Red Sox haven't decided Durbin's position yet, but he'll be training at second and third base alongside Marcelo Mayer. Initially, there was a preference for Mayer at third, which would put Durbin, who had offseason elbow surgery, at second. But that plan might have changed.
Durbin, who spent most of his minor league career as a second baseman, initially struggled at third base during his rookie season with Milwaukee. However, with dedicated work and guidance from infielders coach Matt Erickson, he improved significantly and ended the season with 2 Outs Above Average at the position. He's ready to play wherever needed in Boston.
"The Red Sox want to ensure we're all on the same page regarding comfort at each position," Durbin explains. "I feel good everywhere and will play wherever I'm needed to help the team."
Whether it's Mayer or Durbin at second base, the Red Sox are aiming for stability at this position, which has seen a revolving door of 33 players since Pedroia's last game in 2019.
Durbin and Mayer have history together. Durbin, who turns 26 this month, was once a New York Yankees prospect traded to Milwaukee for closer Devin Williams in 2024. He played against Red Sox prospects, including Mayer, and came up through the Yankees' system with catcher Carlos Narvaez.
"I've always wanted to play at Fenway," Durbin says. "I had success with the Green Monster walls in the minors, so I'm excited for the opportunity."
Durbin has always been the smallest player on his teams and grew up idolizing Pedroia. He's hoping to meet Pedroia this spring, as Cora has invited him to camp in recent years.
"Pedroia was one of my favorite players and a role model for my game," Durbin adds. "I've got a long way to go, but I enjoyed watching him play."

Andruw Monasterio, acquired in the Durbin trade, played 15 games at first base last season. With Triston Casas out until May and Romy Gonzalez dealing with shoulder inflammation, Monasterio's versatility and .755 OPS could make him a backup first baseman for Willson Contreras.
Garrett Crochet and Payton Tolle threw their first live batting practice sessions, but location was an issue. Crochet couldn't work on his new splitter due to falling behind in the count.
Cora hinted that Roman Anthony, who led off 27 games last season, might be the leadoff hitter this year.
Regarding the bullpen, newcomer Jake Bennett, acquired from the Nationals, could be a lefty option. Tyler Samaniego, acquired from the Pirates, is also a pitcher to watch. Lefty Jovani Moran has secured a spot, but the Red Sox are deciding if they need another lefty.
Rehabbing starters Patrick Sandoval and Kutter Crawford are progressing well and are in the mix for the fifth starter spot or a long-man role in the bullpen.
